Accessibility, Usability issues with Splash Pages and Flash

Posted by Mike Scriber on Friday, December 12, 2008

The other day at work I was presented with an idea of having a splash page or flash throughout the site. When I heard this I wasn't to impressed with the idea being a Usability and Accessibility guy.

So when I heard about this I have to admit I would never of thought I'd be asked about having a splash page ever again. Isn't this fad over?

So when I heard this I gave my opinion on a few things and left it that. It was the end of the day and I knew we were going to have another meeting the day after to discuss it further.

With that being said I started to build my case against it. I went to our white board and started jotting down the pros and cons. As you might suspect the cons outweighed the pros by a significant amount, nine to be exact. I might have missed some so please feel fr

2008 NFL Division Predictions

Posted by Mike Scriber on Thursday, July 24, 2008

Well the NFL season is about a month and a half way and football fans have been waiting for this day for months. The season kicks off with the defending Super Bowl Champions New York Giants taking on the Washington Redskins who have recently traded for Jason Taylor.

With this being said it's time for some predictions on who will win each division. Lets start in the AFC.

The AFC East has been dominated by the Patriots and will continue to be dominated by them. I see Buffalo taking second spot ahead of the Jets. To round out the division will be the Miami Dolphins who have a lot of work ahead of them to g

Form Design Patterns

Posted by Mike Scriber on Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Last week I found two great articles from one of my favorite daily reads, which is Smashing Magazine.

They did some research on a hot topic for designers. The topic was Web Form Design Patterns: Sign Up Forms. Make sure you check out Part Two as well.

These articles include categories like Placement, Design and Functionality of the Forms. In each category they're a bunch of sub categories which include Form Title, Label Alignment, Alignment of the Submit Button and many more. I think you'll take a lot from these ar

2008 MLB Home Run Derby

Posted by Mike Scriber on Tuesday, July 15, 2008

So those of you who saw the Home Run Derby last night were treated to an unbelievable story and show.

In the first round Josh Hamilton broke the single-round record held by Bobby Abreu at 24 home runs which was set in 2005 in Detroit. Josh crushed 28 and three of them were over 500 yards. One of those plus 500 yards put him in third place for the longest ever hit.

Josh had everyone in Yankee Stadium standing on their feet and chanting his name. This is quite remarkable considering Yankee fans aren't easy to win over.

Josh wasn't able to pull it out in the finals against Morneau to win the Home Run Derby but he put on a great show and it'll go down as one of the best rounds in a Derby.

FCKEditor Plugin for Rails

Posted by Nathan Rambarran on Friday, April 04, 2008

I want to give a big shout out to Scott Rutherford who made a Rails plugin for the ever so popular FCKEditor. I had the FCKEditor setup within two minutes and haven't hit a single speed bump in the implementation.

For those of you who don't know what FCKEditor is, it's a completely free WYSIWYG editor that's been around for a very long time and I've chosen to use it over TinyMCE, another popular but not AS free editor as FCKEditor time and time again.

Check out Scott's article and plugin at http://blog.caronsoftware.com/2006/08/07/fckeditor-plugin-for-rails

Firefox 3 Beta

Posted by Nathan Rambarran on Friday, March 14, 2008

Firefox 3 Beta is out and it's SWEET! I installed it on my mac early yesterday and I'm loving it. It's blazing fast. Switching between tabs and page loads are remarkably faster than Firefox 2. It feels like I'm flying. It's even got a new design which feels squeaky clean, could it be because my google and web developer toolbar extensions are missing? That's the only downfall I've found so far, none of my extensions from Firefox 2 work in Firefox 3.

Go check it out at: http://en-us.www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-beta.html
